Money Saving Tip

If you have AA home contents insurance and have purchased the additional section to cover personal belongings away from the home, you could save money by excluding baggage and money cover from your travel insurance.

If your contents insurance is with another provider check your policy details to see what’s covered.

1. Remain alert

Be alert at all times especially in crowded areas. Avoid distractions such as mp3 players and mobile phones. Be especially careful when taking pictures as you will not be concentrating on your wallet or bag. A handbag placed on the floor or hanging on the back of your chair in a restaurant is an open invitation to it being stolen.

2. Aware of your surroundings

Be aware of your surroundings – scan the area when approaching your vehicle or accommodation and have your keys ready in hand.

3. Confident and decisive

Walk tall and look like you know what you are doing. Don't wander along examining a map; decide where you want to go and how to get there before you leave your accommodation.

4. Keep valuables out of sight

Don't advertise your wealth – leave your expensive jewellery and watch at home or locked in your hotel safe.

5. Stay in the light

Avoid dark deserted neighbourhoods. Stick to busier main streets. Ask your tour representative or hotel if there are any local areas which tourists should avoid. Use designated taxi ranks or book a taxi by telephone rather than pick one up on the street.

7. Carry what you need

Only carry the amount of cash you will need for that day. Be careful where you carry your money and credit cards, if possible use a money belt concealed under your clothing or an inside pocket.

8. Lock doors and windows

Secure your holiday accommodation – Don't invite burglars with open windows or doors.

9. Park in the light

Park your vehicle in a well lit area. Avoid leaving money or valuables in an unattended car. Ensure that any items left in your vehicle are out of sight in a locked boot or covered luggage area.
