Travel Insurance Tips - Part 5: Obtaining Medical Treatment Abroad
Obtaining medical treatment abroad : What to do in the event that you receive medical treatment abroad
Top tip
If you use an EHIC, which reduces the cost of medical treatment, you will not have to pay the £60 excess for any medical expenses claim.
What to do in the event that you receive medical treatment abroad
In the event that you do require medical treatment abroad follow these steps to get the assistance you need and ensure you have the documentation required to submit a claim:
- Pay the hospital, clinic or doctor for any routine or simple outpatient treatment and claim back the relevant expenses when you return to the UK.
- In the event that you are admitted to hospital for in-patient treatment or are unable to return home as originally planned due to medical reasons you must contact the 24 hour Emergency Assistance Service providers on 00 44 1252 740 360.
- In all cases you should retain original receipts, medical notes and travel documents as these are required to support your claim.
